In this engaging session, Dr Walsh will delve into the current research and role of medicinal cannabis in treating sleep disorders, covering disorders including insomnia, obstructive sleep apnoea, restless legs syndrome, nightmare disorder, and REM sleep behaviour disorder. The outcomes of using medicinal cannabis will be compared to those reported for first-line therapies for these disorders, providing a comprehensive understanding of the potential and limitations of medicinal cannabis in managing sleep disorders.
Learning Outcomes
Dr Jen Walsh, Director of the Centre for Sleep Science at the University of Western Australia, is a distinguished figure in sleep physiology research, leading the sleep physiology research team at the West Australian Sleep Disorders Institute at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. With a rich background spanning exercise, environmental, vascular endothelial, and sleep physiology, she has dedicated the past 20 years to investigating the causes of and treatments for sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea and insomnia.
Dr Walsh has been pivotal in developing and teaching post-graduate courses in sleep science and dental sleep medicine at UWA since 2009, training nearly 200 professionals in this area. A board member of the Australasian Sleep Association and an active member of the Australian Sleep Health Foundation, her research has included exploring the use of medicinal cannabis for treating sleep disorders since 2016.
